Virginia Tour
After seven months in the studio developing choreography for our new dance work, the 9 muses, our season finally began with a tour in Virginia for a week!

With funds provided by private corporations and public grants, Music & Motion Dance traveled throughout Virginia with performances in Norfolk, Newport News and Virginia Beach. All performances were donated and made available to the public for free as a way to make the arts more accessible in these economic times.

The tour started with a performance for about 200 children in summer programs at the Downing-Gross Cultural Arts Center in Newport News. It was exciting to be able to perform in their newly renovated theater dedicated to the First Lady of Song – Ella Fitzgerald Theater. For some of the children in attendance it was their first exposure to modern and contemporary dance.

The next day found us at the Fountain Plaza at The Town Center of Virginia Beach. This was part of an outdoor concert series produced in conjunction with the Sandler Center. It was a perfect evening for an outdoor performance on a Friday night and an incredibly beautiful setting for dance. Perhaps most impressive is how the arts are embraced in this region and people take time out to attend cultural events.

Our next performance was at the The Virginia Zoo in Norfolk under a huge circus tent – much needed given the noon day sun! There were about 150 people in attendance during the course of the performance which was made available for free to zoo goers.

Our final performance was at the Botanical Gardens and was a bit of a challenge as the heat index topped 90 degrees and the humidity was almost at 80%. Little shade was to be found for either the dancers or the audience in attendance. At times the marley dance floor was literally burning the feet and back of our group. However, we managed to get through the program. This is a beautiful setting, just wished the weather had cooperated a bit more!
All in all it was a great trip. We were well received and the show is off to a great start. And of course a little down time at the beach was not so bad either!
